The formula
How to calculate sales tax
Multiply the taxable price by the rate, then add the result to the price.
Turn the rate into a decimal first: 9.03% is 0.0903. Apply discounts before tax. Shipping is taxed in some states and not in others, so check the rules for the state you ship to.
$1,200 in Los Angeles area
1,200 × 0.0903 = $108.36 tax
Total $1,308.36 at California's 9.03% average combined rate.
$1,308.36 total paid
1,308.36 ÷ 1.0903 = $1,200
The price before tax. The tax was $108.36.
$250 price, $270.63 total
(270.63 − 250) ÷ 250 = 8.25%
The combined rate charged on the receipt.
Reverse sales tax
How to take sales tax out of a total
Do not subtract the rate from the total. Divide by one plus the rate.
Subtracting 9.03% of $1,308.36 gives $1,190.21, which is wrong by $9.79. Dividing by 1.0903 gives the correct $1,200, because the tax was charged on the price, not on the total.

Why your receipt may differ
State rate vs local rate
Most states let counties, cities and special districts add their own tax on top of the state rate.
The same everywhere in the state
California's 7.25% applies statewide. Five states charge no state sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon.
Counties, cities, districts
Local taxes can add several points. Alaska has no state tax, but some Alaska towns charge up to 7.85%.
A good estimate, not an exact rate
The exact rate depends on the delivery address. Use the state average to budget, and the exact address rate to invoice.
For sellers
When you must collect sales tax in another state
Since the Supreme Court's 2018 decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair, states can require out-of-state sellers to collect sales tax once their sales into the state pass a threshold.
Most states use $100,000 in annual sales into the state. California and Texas use $500,000. New York uses $500,000 and more than 100 sales. Thresholds and rules change, so check each state's revenue department before you register.

FAQ
Sales tax questions
How do you calculate sales tax?
Multiply the price by the tax rate. $1,200 at 9.03% is $108.36 of tax, so the total is $1,308.36. Apply any discount before you calculate the tax.
How do I calculate sales tax backwards from a total?
Divide the total by one plus the rate. $1,308.36 ÷ 1.0903 = $1,200 before tax. Use the Remove tax tab to do it for any state.
Which states have no sales tax?
Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. Local governments in Alaska can still charge their own sales tax.
Which state has the highest sales tax?
Louisiana has the highest average combined state and local rate, 10.13% as of July 1, 2026, followed by Tennessee (9.61%) and Washington (9.57%). California has the highest state rate, 7.25%.
Why is my rate different from the state average?
Sales tax is charged at the rate of the exact location, which adds county, city and district taxes to the state rate. Two addresses in the same state can have different rates.
Is shipping subject to sales tax?
It depends on the state, and sometimes on how the shipping is billed. Some states tax shipping charges, others do not. Tick "Shipping is taxable" in the calculator if your state taxes it.
What is the difference between sales tax and VAT?
US sales tax is charged once, at the final sale to the consumer, and is added on top of the price. VAT, used in the EU and many other countries, is collected at each stage of production and is usually included in the shelf price.
Do online sellers have to charge sales tax?
Yes, once their sales into a state pass that state's economic nexus threshold, most often $100,000 a year. Marketplaces such as Amazon usually collect the tax for their third-party sellers.
