Short answer

Help Scout costs $25–$75 per user a month billed yearly, plus $0.75 per resolution if you add its AI agent. For AI chat, a team inbox and a CRM at one price for the whole team, try CRMsoftware.pro (from $19 a month for 8 users). For a shared email inbox where the team works together, Front. For teams that live in Gmail, Hiver. For a cheap ticketing help desk, Freshdesk or Zoho Desk. For a low-cost team inbox app without a help center, Missive. For an AI agent built into the help desk and billed per outcome, Intercom (Fin). For enterprise scale, Zendesk. For phone support, LiveAgent.

We checked every price on the vendor's own pricing page on October 12, 2026, both yearly and monthly where the page shows both (Zendesk's AI resolution prices on October 8). Prices are in US dollars, billed yearly unless we say otherwise, before tax. CRMsoftware.pro is our own product, so we list its limits too. No made-up scores or tests: each tool gets its real price, its pros and cons, and who it suits.

What Help Scout costs in 2026

Help Scout pricing page: Standard $25, Plus $45 and Pro $75 per user a month billed annually, AI Answers $0.75 per resolution
Help Scout pricing page, October 12, 2026.

Help Scout is a shared inbox for email, live chat, SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger, with Docs knowledge bases and Beacon, a help widget for your website or app. Plans are priced per user, and AI is billed per resolution on top. The plans on October 12, 2026:

PlanPrice per user/moUsersWhat you get
Free$0Up to 51 inbox, 1 Docs site, 100 contacts a month, 10 saved replies, 10 tags, 10 articles, 30 days of reports
Standard$25 yearly ($30 monthly)Up to 252 inboxes, 2 Docs sites, live chat and SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger, 1 basic SLA policy, basic workflows
Plus$45 ($54)Up to 505 inboxes, 3 Docs sites, advanced workflows, 2 advanced SLA policies, round robin, Salesforce, Jira and HubSpot apps
Pro$75 ($90)Minimum 1010 inboxes, 5 Docs sites, unlimited workflows and SLAs, SSO/SAML, HIPAA compliance, onboarding specialist

AI Answers, Help Scout's AI agent, is an add-on at $0.75 per resolution: you pay once per conversation it solves without a person, and nothing when the customer asks for more help. New accounts get 3 months of unlimited resolutions free, and you can set a monthly spending cap. Extra inboxes cost $10 a month ($12 monthly) and extra Docs sites $20 ($24). Phone calls come through the Aircall integration. There is a 15-day trial of Standard and Plus without a card.

Why teams look for a Help Scout alternative

  • Per-user pricing grows with the team. Ten people on Standard cost $250 a month billed yearly ($300 monthly) before any AI.
  • Plan ceilings. Standard stops at 25 users, so the 26th person moves everyone to Plus: 26 × $45 = $1,170 a month instead of $625. Pro, which includes SSO and HIPAA (add-ons on lower plans), needs at least 10 users ($750 a month).
  • AI is billed on top and lives in the widget. AI Answers costs $0.75 per resolution after the free trial, and Help Scout's own help docs describe it only inside Beacon, the website and in-app widget, so confirm it can answer email before you count on it.
  • No phone or sales pipeline built in. Calls go through Aircall, an add-on, and there is no CRM for deals.
  • The free plan is tight. 100 contacts a month, 10 saved replies and 10 help articles is a trial in practice, not a home for a growing team.

What a 5-person team really pays

Many Help Scout teams are small and work mostly in email. So here is one realistic month: 5 people, 1,000 conversations (600 emails and 400 website chats), the AI answers every chat first and fully resolves 200 of them, and people handle everything else. Billed yearly, list prices, before tax, on the cheapest plan that includes website chat.

Tool and planHow the bill adds upMonthly total
CRMsoftware.pro Growth$49 flat for 20 users and 3,000 AI messages; 400 AI chats use about 1,200 at 3 AI messages each$49
LiveAgent Small Business5 × $15 = $75; AI agents are on the plan, but their usage price is not on the pricing page$75 + AI
Hiver Growth5 × $25 = $125; AI agents are listed on every plan and the pricing page shows no usage fee (it also does not confirm live chat on Growth)From $125
Zoho Desk Enterprise5 × $40 = $200; website live chat (Zoho SalesIQ) starts on Enterprise; AI agent usage is not priced on the page$200 + AI
Help Scout Standard5 × $25 = $125 + 200 AI resolutions × $0.75 = $150$275 ($125 during the 3-month AI trial)
Freshdesk Omni Growth5 × $29 = $145 + 400 AI sessions; the first 500 are free once, then 4 × $49 = $196 a month$341 (after the free sessions)
Intercom Essential5 × $29 = $145 + 200 resolved chats × $0.99 = $198; chats Fin cannot solve cost nothing$343 ($293 at the $19 seat price)
Front Professional5 × $65 = $325 (Starter allows one channel type, so email plus chat needs Professional) + Autopilot from 400 chats × $0.05 = $20, quoted by salesFrom $345
Zendesk Suite Team5 × $55 = $275 + 175 resolutions beyond the 25 included × $1.50–$2.00 = $262.50–$350$537.50–$625

Help Scout lands in the middle. Its seats are fair and $0.75 per resolution is cheaper than Intercom or Zendesk, but the AI part of the bill grows with every chat it solves. CRMsoftware.pro stays flat until you pass the plan's AI message or user limit, and Hiver shows no AI usage fee on its pricing page, while Zendesk costs the most because each automated resolution beyond the included ones is $1.50–$2.00. Missive is not in the table: at 5 × $14 = $70 on Starter it handles the email side, but its pricing page lists no website chat widget or AI agent for customers. Your numbers will differ, so try our free AI chatbot pricing calculator, and the live chat staffing calculator to see how many people your chat volume needs.

What the seats cost as the team grows

Per-user prices look alike at 3 people and drift apart at 10 and 25. Seats only, billed yearly, no AI, on the cheapest plan with email and website chat:

Tool and plan3 people10 people25 people
CRMsoftware.pro (flat price per team)$49 (Growth; saved replies are listed from Growth, Launch is $19)$49 (Growth, up to 20 users)$99 (Scale, up to 50 users)
LiveAgent Small Business ($15)$45$150$375
Help Scout Standard ($25)$75$250$625 (the limit; 26 users on Plus = $1,170)
Hiver Growth ($25; live chat on Growth not confirmed on the page)$125 (seats come in 2, 5, then steps of 5)$250$625
Intercom Essential ($29)$87$290$725
Freshdesk Omni Growth ($29)$87$290$725
Zoho Desk Enterprise ($40)$120$400$1,000
Zendesk Suite Team ($55)$165$550$1,375
Front Professional ($65)$195$650$1,625

If you only need email, the cheaper plans change the picture: Zoho Desk Express is $7 a user (Standard at $14 adds a knowledge base), Freshdesk Growth $19, Zendesk Support Team $19, Missive Starter $14 for up to 5 users and Front Starter $25 for one channel type.

The 9 best Help Scout alternatives

1. CRMsoftware.pro: best for AI chat plus a CRM at one team price

CRMsoftware.pro homepage: an AI agent answers on website chat, email, WhatsApp, Slack and Telegram and adds each conversation to the pipeline
CRMsoftware.pro homepage, October 2026.

CRMsoftware.pro is our product, so judge this section with that in mind. Where Help Scout charges per user and then per AI resolution, CRMsoftware.pro charges one price for the team with AI messages included. The AI agent answers on your website, email, WhatsApp, Telegram and Slack, hands over to a person in the shared inbox, and every conversation becomes a contact and a deal in the CRM pipeline. AI voice agents and bookings are part of the product; check which plan you need for them.

Price (Oct 12, 2026): Free for 3 users and 100 AI messages a month (AI only: no human handover or unified inbox). Launch $19/mo billed yearly ($24 monthly) for 8 users, 1,000 AI messages, 2 websites, human handover and a unified inbox. Growth $49 ($59) for 20 users, 3,000 AI messages, 5 websites, team inbox with saved replies and auto-translation. Scale $99 ($119) for 50 users and 10,000 AI messages.

Pros: flat price for the whole team; AI messages included on every plan, so no per-resolution meter; CRM pipeline, bookings and AI voice built in; WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger from Launch.

Cons: no public help center like Help Scout Docs (the knowledge base trains the AI); no SLA policies or ticket statuses in the help-desk sense; far fewer integrations than Help Scout or Zendesk.

Best for: small sales and support teams that want AI answers and a CRM in one bill, and handle more chat than long email threads.

2. Front: best shared inbox for team collaboration

Front pricing page: Starter $25, Professional $65 and Enterprise $105 per seat a month, billed annually
Front pricing page, October 12, 2026.

Front is the closest match to Help Scout's way of working: a shared inbox that looks like email, with assignments, internal comments, shared drafts and a public knowledge base. It goes further on collaboration and on AI, with Copilot for agents and Autopilot, an AI agent sold through sales.

Price (Oct 12, 2026): Starter $25/seat/mo billed yearly ($35 monthly), up to 10 seats and one channel type (email, Front Chat or SMS). Professional $65 ($85), up to 50 seats, with every channel, macros, advanced analytics and SSO. Enterprise $105, yearly only, with AI Copilot, QA and CSAT included. Copilot is $20 a seat on the lower plans; Autopilot starts at $0.05 per conversation through sales. Native WhatsApp on Professional and Enterprise at Meta's cost plus a 20% fee. 14-day trial of Professional without a card.

Pros: the best collaboration tools on email; clean, inbox-style interface; strong rules and analytics on Professional.

Cons: Starter covers one channel type, so email plus chat means $65 a seat, the priciest plan with chat in our tables; AI agent pricing is not self-serve.

Best for: account management and support teams that handle long email threads together.

3. Hiver: best for teams that work in Gmail

Hiver Omni pricing page: Growth $25, Pro $55 and Elite $85 per user a month, AI agents on all plans
Hiver pricing page, October 12, 2026.

Hiver comes in two versions at the same price: Hiver in Gmail, which turns Gmail into a shared help desk so agents never leave their inbox, and Hiver Omni, a standalone app for email, live chat, WhatsApp, voice and social. AI agents and an AI copilot are listed on every plan.

Price (Oct 12, 2026): Growth $25/user/mo billed yearly ($35 monthly) with AI agents, AI Copilot, shared inbox and ticketing. Pro $55 ($65) adds a customer portal, SLAs, CSAT surveys and API access. Elite $85 ($95) adds AI QA, AI insights, skill-based routing, SSO and HIPAA. Voice is $30 per voice seat. Plans start at 2 seats, then 5, then steps of 5. 7-day trial of Elite, free migration help.

Pros: no new tool for Gmail teams; AI agents listed without a usage fee on the pricing page; SOC 2, ISO 27001 and HIPAA.

Cons: SLAs need Pro; seat steps of 5 mean a 3-person team pays for 5; the pricing page does not say which channels each plan includes, so confirm live chat on Growth in the 7-day trial.

Best for: Google Workspace teams that want help-desk features without leaving Gmail.

4. Freshdesk: best budget ticketing help desk

Freshdesk pricing page: Growth $19, Pro $55 and Enterprise $89 per agent a month billed annually, first 500 Freddy AI Agent sessions included
Freshdesk pricing page, October 12, 2026.

Freshdesk is a classic ticketing help desk with a customer portal, knowledge base, SLAs and the Freddy AI Agent. Freshdesk covers email and web tickets; Freshdesk Omni adds live chat and messaging apps in the same seat.

Price (Oct 12, 2026): Freshdesk Growth $19/agent/mo billed yearly, Pro $55, Enterprise $89. Freshdesk Omni Growth $29, Pro $79, Enterprise $119. Every paid plan gets 500 Freddy AI Agent sessions once, then $49 per 100 sessions; a session is all of a customer's chats with the bot in 24 hours. Freddy AI Copilot is $29/agent/mo on Pro and Enterprise. The free plan is now $0 for 1–2 agents for 6 months. 14-day trial.

Pros: real tickets, SLAs and a portal at a low seat price; Omni puts chat and email in one seat.

Cons: sessions are counted per 24-hour window, not per resolution; the 500 free sessions are one-time; multiple SLA policies need Pro.

Best for: growing support teams that want structured tickets and SLAs on a budget.

5. Zoho Desk: lowest seat price and a free plan

Zoho Desk pricing page: Express US$7, Standard US$14, Professional US$23 and Enterprise US$40 per user a month billed annually
Zoho Desk pricing page, October 12, 2026.

Zoho Desk is a full ticketing help desk at the lowest per-user prices here, and it fits neatly if you already use Zoho CRM. Channels are spread across the plans: email and social on Express, messaging apps and a knowledge base on Standard, phone on Professional and website live chat on Enterprise.

Price (Oct 12, 2026): Free for 3 users with email ticketing. Express $7/user/mo billed yearly ($9 monthly) with email, social, web forms, AI agents and generative AI with your own key. Standard $14 ($20) adds business messaging, an answer bot, a knowledge base and community forum. Professional $23 ($35) adds telephony, Zia AI and a multilingual help center. Enterprise $40 ($50) adds live chat through Zoho SalesIQ and skill-based assignment. Free migration help.

Pros: cheapest seats for a real help desk; free plan with 3 users; deep Zoho integrations.

Cons: website live chat only on Enterprise; AI agent usage pricing is not on the pricing page; features are spread across four paid plans, so check which one has what you need.

Best for: budget-conscious teams that mostly answer email, and Zoho CRM users.

6. Missive: low-cost team inbox app

Missive pricing page: Starter $14, Productive $24 and Business $36 per user a month billed yearly
Missive pricing page, October 12, 2026.

Missive is a team email app rather than a help desk: shared and personal inboxes, internal chat on every thread, assignments, tasks and rules, plus SMS, WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram. If Help Scout's Docs and Beacon go unused and the team just answers email together, it costs less.

Price (Oct 12, 2026): Starter $14/user/mo billed yearly ($18 monthly) for up to 5 users. Productive $24 ($30) for up to 50 users with integrations, rules, analytics and API. Business $36 ($45) with SSO and advanced analytics. AI drafts and summaries run on Missive AI credits or your own Anthropic, OpenAI or Gemini key. 30-day trial without a card.

Pros: lower seat price than Front or Hiver; personal and team email in one app; desktop and mobile apps.

Cons: the pricing page lists no help center, website chat widget or AI agent that answers customers; Starter stops at 5 users.

Best for: small teams whose support is all email and who do not need a help center.

7. Intercom (Fin): best AI agent built into the help desk

Intercom pricing page: helpdesk plans with Fin AI Agent built in, $0.99 per outcome
Intercom pricing page, October 2026.

Intercom is now sold by Fin, the company's name since May 2026, and Salesforce completed its acquisition of Fin on September 10, 2026. The product is the Intercom helpdesk with the Fin AI Agent built in. Fin works across chat, email and other channels. Like AI Answers it bills per result: $0.99 per outcome, at most one per conversation.

Price (Oct 12, 2026): Essential $29/seat/mo billed yearly on the US page; some visitors see $19 ($29 monthly), and we saw both prices in October 2026. Advanced $85 ($99 monthly), Expert $132 ($139). Fin $0.99 per outcome on every plan. 14-day trial without a card.

Pros: an AI agent that also answers email; help center, tickets and messenger in one; mature integrations.

Cons: no free plan; $0.99 per outcome is more than Help Scout's $0.75; Advanced and Expert seats are expensive.

Best for: SaaS teams that want an AI agent for chat and email plus in-app messaging, and can pay per solved conversation.

8. Zendesk: best enterprise help desk

Zendesk pricing page: Support Team $19, Suite Team $55 and Suite Professional $115 per agent a month paid yearly
Zendesk pricing page, October 2026.

Zendesk is the enterprise answer: email, tickets, messaging, live chat, phone, a knowledge base and AI agents in one suite with a large app marketplace. The cheapest plan, Support Team, is email and tickets; live chat and messaging start on Suite Team. Zendesk says AI agents are included in every Suite and Support plan, billed by the resolutions they deliver.

Price (Oct 12, 2026): Support Team $19/agent/mo billed yearly. Suite Team $55 with messaging, live chat, phone, a knowledge base and AI agents, including 5 automated resolutions per agent a month. Suite Professional $115 with 10 included resolutions and Admin Copilot. Extra automated resolutions cost $1.50 each with a volume commitment or $2.00 pay-as-you-go (checked Oct 8). Copilot for agents $50/agent/mo. 14-day trial.

Pros: every channel and a deep ticketing system; strong reporting, SLAs and permissions; scales to large teams.

Cons: chat starts at $55 a seat; setup takes real work; extra AI resolutions cost two to almost three times Help Scout's $0.75.

Best for: mid-size and larger teams that need a full help desk and reporting.

9. LiveAgent: best help desk with a call center

LiveAgent pricing page: Small business $15, Medium $29, Large $49 and Enterprise $69 per agent a month billed annually
LiveAgent pricing page, October 12, 2026.

LiveAgent is a ticketing help desk with live chat, a knowledge base, a customer portal and a built-in call center, at some of the lowest seat prices in this list. It is the pick when you answer the phone as much as email.

Price (Oct 12, 2026): Small Business $15/agent/mo billed yearly ($19 monthly) with AI agents, ticketing, live chat, knowledge base and customer portal. Medium $29 ($35) adds the call center with IVR, proactive chat and reports. Large $49 ($59) adds social channels. Enterprise $69 ($85). 30-day trial, no card, no free plan.

Pros: the lowest per-seat price for live chat plus tickets here; call center from Medium; long trial.

Cons: the AI agents' usage price is not on the pricing page; social channels need Large; the interface is dense.

Best for: small teams that support customers by phone, email and chat.

Also considered: Groove, now Helply

Groove used to be a common pick for Help Scout switchers, but groovehq.com now redirects to Helply, whose homepage says "Groove is now Helply": an AI-first help desk from the same team. Existing Groove accounts keep running at their current prices, according to Groove's help center. Helply has unlimited users and charges for AI work in credit blocks, from $49 a month for 500 credits; its own estimate is about 7 credits per B2B conversation, so 1,000 B2B conversations need a 7,000-credit block at $399 a month. We left it out of the tables because it prices AI work, not seats.

Free Help Scout alternatives

Help Scout's own free plan is the first thing to try. If it is too small, these are the free options that matter on October 12, 2026:

ToolFree planCatch
Help Scout5 users, 1 inbox, 1 Docs site100 contacts a month; 10 saved replies, tags and articles
Zoho Desk3 users, email ticketingWebsite chat only on the $40 Enterprise plan
Freshdesk1–2 agentsFree for 6 months only; no free AI sessions
CRMsoftware.pro3 users, 100 AI messages a month, website chatAI only: no human handover or team inbox until Launch ($19)

When to stay on Help Scout

  • Email is most of your work and you are 25 people or fewer. Standard at $25 a user is fair value for a calm shared inbox with Docs and Beacon included.
  • You rely on Docs. Two help-center sites on Standard and three on Plus are hard to match at this price; Missive's pricing page lists no public help center, CRMsoftware.pro has none, and Front's knowledge base is basic on Starter.
  • Your AI volume is low. 100 resolutions a month cost $75, and new accounts get 3 months free. Count before you switch.

How to choose

  • Count your people and your chats. Per-user tools (Help Scout, Front, Hiver, Intercom, Zendesk) cost more with every hire. Helply has unlimited users, and CRMsoftware.pro only moves up a plan at 8, 20 or 50 users or when you pass its AI message limit.
  • Decide how much email versus chat you handle. Email-heavy teams fit Front, Hiver, Missive or Zoho Desk. Chat-heavy teams get more from an AI agent with included messages or per-result billing.
  • Check where the AI works. Help Scout's AI Answers runs in the Beacon widget; Fin also answers email. If you want the AI to reply to email, confirm it in the trial.
  • Price the plan you will really need. Front Starter is one channel type, Zoho Desk has chat only on Enterprise, Freshdesk needs Omni for live chat, and Zendesk needs Suite for chat.
  • Run a 2-week trial with real conversations and compare cost per conversation and resolution rate, not feature lists.

How to switch from Help Scout

  1. Export what you own. Help Scout has no one-click export of conversations: they come out through the Inbox API, Docs articles through the Docs API, and reports as CSV or Excel files. Ask the new vendor whether its importer reads Help Scout; Zoho Desk and Hiver offer free migration help.
  2. Rebuild saved replies, tags and workflows. Use the switch to clean them up; our customer service email templates and live chat canned responses are a quick start.
  3. Move your Docs. Import the articles into the new help center or knowledge base, then redirect your old Docs URLs so links in old emails keep working. Our FAQ knowledge base starter helps fill gaps for the AI.
  4. Set handover rules. Decide when the AI passes a conversation to a person and who gets it; our human handover playbook has the rules we use.
  5. Switch the channels. Point your support address forwarding at the new tool, replace the Beacon snippet on your site and in your app, and reconnect WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger.
  6. Keep Help Scout read-only for a month and compare the first full bill with the tables above before you cancel.
